AAFW 23: O&M X Gail Sorronda

Dark met light as Gail Sorronda’s gothic inspired showcase, titled ‘In Dreams’ found its angelic side at Afterpay Australian Fashion Week, with a duality that was captured by hair partner O&M and hair director and brand ambassador John Pulitano of Headcase Hair.

“The ethos behind the collection and the hair is what the goth! We’re creating goth-like looks but with an angelic and ethereal feel,” John explained. “The collection is gothic, yet regal – it’s layered, textured and monochromatic. The texture and webbiness of the hair almost allows it to become an extension of the garment. The look is slicked down to the head, creating a beautiful contour down to the neck, where the hair begins to flow freely. We have created some movement around the face by sectioning out some strands and delicately cascading them down the face.”

John worked to accentuate the flyaways of the hair and mix this softness with strength to evoke Gail’s “goth angels”, merging a slick look with a bit of fluff that ensured the texture became “a meeting of both worlds”. It was imperative to not veer too much into the theatrical side and keep it high fashion.

“We’ve used the Original Queenie hairspray throughout the whole look to create the head hugging look, keeping it very rough and textured, while the face framing pieces are secured with Style Guru to create a melted, softer look,” John said.

The Gail Sorronda aesthetic captures a Manichaean theme in her clothes and accessories, showcasing binaries such as local and foreigner, masculine and feminine, spirit and sensuality, body and soul in what she describes as “feelings in fabric, poems you can wear”.

The look taps into these editorial themes while staying wearable. Get the look below.

  • STEP 2: Slick the hair down to a side part and begin sectioning the hair, layer by layer, using Style Guru to create a wet and slick down look at the roots, allowing the ends to flow freely.
