AAFW 23: Redken X Erik Yvon

Joy and individuality comprised the hair brief for Erik Yvon with Redken backstage to style the show. Hair director Jacky Chan worked with Erik Yvon to create beauty and chaos on the runway.

“We wanted to make this fun and eye-catching – it was all about the Erik Yvon brand and what the designs looked like. We utilised three different looks, some with stencil and pops of pink, and then we created some glitter looks and hair pieces for a really fun runway,” Jacky said.

“The inspiration comes from the collection, a lot of it came from the colour palette he used and his inspiration of volcanoes, so there’s a lot of volcanic swirls and colours. We want to make sure it’s fun so we want keep a lot of pops of colour, a bit of glitter, hair ties and stencilling, to really make it pop and enjoy that bit of colour in life,” he added.

Redken’s Thermal Spray Low Hold 11 was used to protect the models’ hair and add gentle hold and control while styling, and the brand’s Max Sculpt Gel was essential in creating a blank canvas that allowed the team to layer product, as well as offering hold and shine.

“It’s a very nice, strong hold that created a blank canvas on the hair, allowing me to use different mediums on their hair and build the looks,” Jacky said of the Max Sculpt Gel.

The fashion collection offered the brand’s signature style that celebrates joy and individuality, while highlighting diversity in age, gender, shape and ethnicities on the runway, as well as paying homage to Mauritian heritage. The designs are non-gendered, showcasing new prints and textiles, signature Doudou bra designs, flowing gowns and the brand’s iconic swim. The runway show also collaborated with Wigged Out as a nod to the queer community and nightlife from whom Erik Yvon draws inspiration.
