Boosting ‘Spa Morale’: 5 Things Leaders Can Do To Encourage Positive Mental Health In Your Spa Or Clinic

October is Mental Health Month and while spa and clinic professionals excel at enhancing their client’s mental health (hello mindfulness and relaxation), we can easily overlook our own (or our employees)!

As leaders in this industry, we have a unique responsibility to nurture an environment that not only caters to our clients’ wellbeing but also prioritises the mental health of our own team. Below, psychologist Dr. Maria-Elena Lukeides from The Wellness Fountain shares her 5 tips for boosting ‘Spa Morale’ to foster better mental health amongst employees.

Dr. Maria-Elena Lukeides (pictured above) is a highly experienced clinical psychologist based in Sydney, with over 20 years of expertise in the field of psychology. She specialises in treating a wide range of psychological issues and holds qualifications as a mindfulness and meditation teacher.

Cultivate Open Communication

Foster a safe space

Establishing an atmosphere of open communication is vital for promoting positive mental health. This means going beyond an ‘open-door policy’ to create a culture where every team member feels safe, valued, and heard. Encourage regular opportunities for your team to express their thoughts and concerns, whether through weekly meetings or check-ins, ensuring they have the space to be heard.

Practice active listening

When team members share their experiences or concerns, give them your full attention. Try to avoid interrupting them and refrain from jumping to solutions too quickly (easier said than done, I know)! Always respond with empathy and reflect back what you’ve heard (which can help them to feel validated in their feelings).

Address Conflicts Proactively

Don’t avoid workplace conflicts; tackle them as soon as you can (and in a professional manner). Mediate discussions between conflicting parties and provide conflict resolution training. Establish clear, confidential protocols for addressing grievances (ensuring all voices are heard and respected, even in challenging situations).

Prioritise Work-Life Balance

Flexible Scheduling

Flexible scheduling is vital in modern work environments (and it benefits both employees and employers). Try to offer options such as flexible start and end times, compressed workweeks, remote work, or job sharing. This ultimately shows you are willing to accommodate their individual needs and commitments outside of work. While it may not always be feasible in a spa or clinic setting, offering flexibility when possible can significantly impact employee satisfaction (in the best possible way)!

Encourage breaks

Encourage regular breaks throughout the day for staff to recharge and refocus (we all know that ‘taking a moment’ can have positive benefits on the mind). Consider creating a ‘Recharge Room’ aka a dedicated space for staff to retreat, decompress, and practice mindfulness between clients. This sanctuary can significantly improve mental health by providing a place to reset emotionally (mirroring the care you provide in treatment rooms).

Invest in Professional Development

Skill enhancement

Provide opportunities for staff to expand their knowledge and skills through workshops, training sessions, and industry conferences. This gives them a tangible way to measure their own growth and advancement (plus that feeling of forward momentum is highly motivating and morale-boosting)!

Career growth

Invest in your staff’s professional development by creating personalised career plans. This demonstrates your commitment to their long-term success and shows that you truly value their growth. By providing clear pathways for advancement, you’ll boost job satisfaction and morale (while giving employees tangible steps towards their career goals). This approach not only benefits individual staff members but also strengthens your team and business overall.

Foster a Supportive Team Environment

Team-building activities

Organise regular team outings or in-house events to strengthen bonds between staff members and create a sense of community. This gives staff the opportunity to interact in a more relaxed and informal setting, helping to break down barriers and improving workplace relationships. Team-building activities can significantly improve communication, which not only leads to better teamwork and efficiency, but boosts overall morale as staff feel more connected and understood.

Peer support system

Implement a peer support system or mentorship program to encourage collaboration among team members. Receiving support from peers and being able to help others in turn can combat any feelings of isolation, whilst also boosting self-esteem and confidence in their own role.

Lead by Example

Self-care practices

Demonstrate the importance of self-care by prioritising your own mental health (that means, before everyone else!) When leaders model self-care, it sends a powerful message that taking care of one’s mental and emotional wellbeing is essential, not just for personal health but also for professional performance.

Positive attitude

Maintain an optimistic outlook where possible and approach challenges with a solution-oriented mindset (inspiring your staff to do the same). By ‘leading the way’ you can create a supportive environment that encourages staff to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth. This positive atmosphere not only enhances morale but also fosters collaboration and innovation, enabling the entire team to thrive together.
