Can a DNA Test Measure Skin Health and Drive Client Bookings? This Clinic Owner is Banking On It

In the age of AI and computer-driven diagnostics, consumers are becoming increasingly undaunted by tools and gadgets designed to improve their lives. In a professional beauty and aesthetics setting, skin diagnostic tools have been used for decades, from the woods lamps of yesteryear, to today’s numerically-based measuring tools.

But one clinic owner is opting to take her skin diagnosis game to the next level: using client DNA. Sara Lavis is an emergency nurse and the owner and founder of Skin Collective in Perth, WA. Sara isn’t immune to investing in unique services and technologies to gain a leg up in a competitive clinic landscape. In her view, taking a “proactive approach” to skin diagnosis “ensures clients aren’t just treating visible symptoms but are also working to prevent potential skin issues before they arise, setting them up for long-term skin health.”

Testing involves a simple, non-invasive cheek swab that analyses genetic markers associated with key skin functions, such as collagen production, inflammation, and environmental defenses, Sara explains. “These markers are evaluated using advanced laboratory techniques, providing an in-depth understanding of how the client’s genes influence their skin’s behavior. The results are then translated into a personalised report, detailing areas of higher and medium risk and offering actionable recommendations across topical ingredients, treatments, and supplements.”

It’s a smart path to take, with clients leaning heavily on trust in their providers to deliver effective and meaningful results. Utilising a DNA test based on the client’s individual genetic markers adds an additional layer of evidence to the visible markers therapists rely on to correctly diagnose the skin.

Sara Lavis invested in both the Lyma Laser Pro and Lyma and the LYMA Laser 500 retail devices. She explains how she secures her ROI here.

“At Skin Collective, we understand that one-size-fits-all skincare is a thing of the past. Our personalised Skin DNA analysis empowers clients with tailored insights into their skin’s genetic blueprint, allowing us to address their unique needs at more of a root level,” Sara explains. “By identifying genetic predispositions—such as risks for collagen breakdown, glycation, pigmentation, and sensitivity—we can design a bespoke treatment and skincare plan.”

Clients are only required to take the test once at the commencement of their journey, given DNA doesn’t change. Doing this establishes the client’s “genetic baseline” and allows the therapist to “tailor their treatment plan accordingly.” However, Sara adds, “we do re-visit the client’s personalised report to refine their skincare regimen based on lifestyle or environmental factors, ensuring their plan remains effective and relevant throughout their journey with us.”

“Once the genetic analysis is complete, the results are compiled into a comprehensive, easy-to-understand report,” Sara explains. “This report includes detailed explanations of the client’s risk categories, along with scientifically tailored recommendations for skincare products, treatments, and lifestyle adjustments. Our nurses and skin therapists use this information as the foundation for creating highly individualised treatment plans. This collaborative approach between science and expertise ensures every client receives targeted care that in turn, delivers measurable results.”

Sara combines DNA testing with other diagnostic tools such as the Skinceuticals Skinscope LED and Clinical Imaging filters “to assess each client’s skin at the beginning and throughout their treatment plan”. “Together, these tools allow us to collect comprehensive data to create and adapt highly personalised and results-driven skincare solutions,” she says.
