How the US is leading the innovation in tattoo removal

With a rise in consumers seeking tattoo removal for their unwanted ink, the tattoo removal market has increased significantly over the past decade.

Whilst tattoo removal procedures can be uncomfortable, have a significant amount of downtime, and require up to 15-20 sessions; laser technology is continuing to innovate in ways that can reduce these considerations like the duration of removal, pain, and number of sessions that a patient is required to undergo. One of the somewhat newer innovations comes out of the US, which is claimed to decrease downtime significantly, allow multiple passes, and remove a higher percentage of ink each session compared to standard tattoo removal – all thanks to a tattoo removal patch known as Describe PFD.

Describe PFD tattoo removal patch, exclusively owned by Merz Aesthetics, is a perfluorodecalin-infused patch, which is used along with existing tattoo removal laser technology. The tattoo removal patch is gel based, which is made up of dual layer silicon. Its highly advantageous technology allows the physician to remove or treat tattoos more efficiently through rapid multiple laser, passing in a single session and requires a specific wavelength for the removal of the tattoo.

PFD tattoo removal patch decreases the thermal exposure to the tattooed skin. It underwent a new clearance by the FDA in 2017, and can be used with multiple wavelengths. Various studies have shown that the PFD patch with picosecond laser and Q-switched can be used safely and effectively in darker inks.

Whilst this PFD patch is prescription only and currently only available in the states, this puts forward new innovation proposals towards the Australasian market.
