Introducing The Australasian Society Of Cosmetic And Procedural Dermatologists (ASCPD)

As it strengthens its position as the leading authority in the fields of cosmetic dermatology and skin health, the organisation previously known as ASCD has chosen to evolve its name to more accurately reflect the wide-ranging work undertaken by its members. In an exciting development, it will now be known as the Australasian Society of Cosmetic and Procedural Dermatologists (ASCPD).
Founded in 2013, the ASCPD welcomed the New Zealand Society of Dermatologists in 2019, appointing a member to the ASCPD Board during the process. The activities of the ASCPD are supported by the Board, comprising 16 members, as well as approximately 200 individual dermatologists from Australia and New Zealand. Membership is open to all dermatologists and dermatology trainees throughout Australia and New Zealand.

Discussing the name change, ASCPD Chair Professor Greg Goodman emphasised that it signifies a new chapter in its history. The inclusion of the term “procedural” underscores a commitment to clinical excellence, patient safety, and education based on evidence.
“The term ‘cosmetic’ alone doesn’t fully represent what we do,” he explains. “Especially when cosmetic techniques can be used for medical treatments such as scarring, skin diseases, pain syndromes and hyperhidrosis and lasers used for a myriad of medical indications.”
He says the name change, which came into effect at the 2025 ASCD Symposium in March, will also support the ASCPD’s position within the wider medical and surgical community, showing the depth of skill involved in procedural dermatology.
What Is procedural dermatology?
While cosmetic dermatology is often associated with non-invasive treatments, their work extends much further and includes:
- Diagnosing and treating dermatological conditions that have both aesthetic and functional impacts
- Advanced laser and energy-based treatments for skin resurfacing, pigmentation, and vascular conditions
- Non-surgical treatment of skin cancers and sun damage
- Managing acne scarring, haemangiomas, keloids, and other skin concerns
- Using cosmetic treatments not just for cosmetic purposes, but also for many medical treatments.
Continuing leadership, innovation and research
For the ASCPD, this shift isn’t just about a name, it’s about better representing what they stand for. “Our focus on leadership, innovation, research, and education remains at the core of what we do, and this will be front and centre at our March conference and beyond,” says Professor Goodman. The ASCPD will continue working with TPHE and Modern Currency to complete the new brand rollout across their website, journal and communications over the coming months.
