Job Hunting In 2023: Who Is Hiring?

Job Hunting In 2023: Who Is Hiring?

The start of a new year sparks the perfect time to kickstart your job hunting, says Kirstie McDermott.

As the year winds down and the party season ramps up, it’s a busy time in beauty: for those in retail and salons in particular, December is likely to be the most frantic month of the year too. Data from card reader company Zettle backs this up.

December 22nd is to be the day with the highest number of transactions of the whole year for health and beauty practitioners, the company said, with December 18th the second most busy day in December. Then, of course, you’ve got New Year to think about: the December 27th-30th dates are also an accelerating pre-New Year’s rush.

It wouldn’t be much of a surprise if you hadn’t had time to turn around, let alone think about your career plans for 2023. But this is a great time of year to plan ahead and Australians love a New Year’s resolution: research shows that 72% of Australians––or almost 14 million people––set at least one New Year’s resolution last year.

Women are a little more likely than men to make a promise to themselves at 74%, compared to 70% of men, and it is actually younger people who make the most commitments to set new goals for the new year.

91% of Gen Z Australians and 87% of Millennials made New Year’s resolutions last year. The obvious ones around health and exercise came out top, but 7% of all age groups vowed to get a new job.

Reset

That figure can be seen in how Australian workers have adapted to their own version of the Great Resignation, the pandemic-era trend that originated in the U.S. There, more than 47 million workers quit their jobs in 2021, or 23.5% of the total U.S. workforce.

Here, the picture isn’t quite so dramatic, but Australian workers are voting with their feet. PwC Australia surveyed over 1,800 Australians for its ‘What Workers Want’ report and found that 85% of workers experienced mental health challenges during the pandemic and more than one-third consider their employer the main source of mental health support.

Six in 10 people who have left an organisation in the past year are looking to leave their current employer in the next 12 months too. When it comes to motivating factors, Australian employees have specific drivers that attract them too, the study found. Remuneration and rewards was ranked the highest at 25% with wellbeing coming in at 22%, and experience came in at 16%.
