Maximise Your Next Professional Development Session with These 5 Tips

TAFE Queensland educator, Lacie Green shares five tips to improve knowledge recall following your beauty professional development and training.

In our industry, substantial investments are made annually in training and professional development. But are we truly reaping the benefits?

Here’s how you can make the most out of your next Professional Development session:

Do Your Research

Before attending any training session—whether it’s a product knowledge seminar, new equipment demonstration, or certification course—make it a priority to research the provider, the trainer, and the content. Familiarise yourself with the topics and tools being covered. This prep work ensures you’re not encountering new concepts cold, allowing you to engage more deeply and apply what you learn effectively back in the salon.

Fuel Up Properly

Don’t arrive on an empty stomach. A good breakfast will keep you energised and focused throughout the session. Hydrate, nourish yourself with a balanced meal, and enjoy a caffeine boost if needed. This will help maintain your concentration and set you up for a productive day.

Take Comprehensive Notes

Actively capturing down key points and your own insights during the session enhances information retention. Even if you don’t refer back to your notes frequently, the act of note-taking reinforces learning and helps with recall. Don’t rely solely on handouts—your personal notes are invaluable for reinforcing and retaining information.

Be an Engaged Learner

Sit at the front, ask questions, and participate actively in discussions and activities. Engaged learners not only gain more from the session but also benefit from networking opportunities with peers. Active participation boosts your confidence and helps you internalise the content more effectively.

Solidify Your Learning

Don’t let your new knowledge fade after the session. Reinforce what you’ve learned with my 5-step recall process:

  1. Write down five key takeaways from the session.
  2. List four follow-up questions you have for the trainer.
  3. Identify three areas for improvement in your salon practice.
  4. Plan two actions to further your knowledge.
  5. Note one challenge you faced during the training.

By following these tips, you and your team can maximise the benefits of your professional development activities, fully harness your learning potential, and confidently apply new techniques and knowledge.
