O&M and hair director Sheridan Rose of MAMAWEST partnered with and styled the ‘The Grand Silky Ball’, celebrating five years of House of Silky on June 8 at Machine Hall for Vivid Sydney 2024. The highly glamorous hair looks drew on Sheridan’s renowned experience in genderless, fluid hair styles and innovative cuts and colour.

“The overall style of the hair is super high glam, each look is unique to the model. There is no key look today, it’s all about celebrating each models’ individuality and expressing that by enhancing their natural hair texture, accentuating their edges and installing wigs for ultimate expression. It’s a luxury to work across the House of Silky Ball during Pride Month, it’s not uniform or structured, so it’s all about the individual.” Sheridan said.

The event built on an empire started by ‘Father Xaddy’ and ‘Mother Miri’, who launched the Kiki House of Silky in 2019, which has expanded nationally and even internationally since, with unique balls hosted globally, from Sydney World Pride 2023 to Australian Fashion Week and more. The events have become a staple of the global queer community, always promising to be “stylish, sexy and stupid”.

“The purpose of our Silky Ball is to bring the queer community together through music and dance, embracing each other and celebrating Pride Month,” House of Silky shared, describing the festivities as including “all-out-voguing, fantastical fashion and chosen-family revelry”.

“It’s important to unite the queer community and celebrate without rules, with the support of brands like O&M, alongside a hair team who have the skillset to work with POC hair,” Sheridan added. “While every look is different and each model has their own individual hair texture, we have heroed three main products to prep the hair whilst enhancing texture and securing strong hold.”

O&M Surf Bomb Sea Salt Spray, Atonic Thickening Spritz and Original Queenie Firm Hold Hairspray were these key products of choice.

Get the look – ‘Pinned-Curls’ hair”

1. Start by applying the O&M Atonic Thickening Spritz, taking 1-inch sections and applying all throughout the hair as prep to creating texture, hold and grit.
2. Apply O&M Surf Bomb over the top of the hair, blowdrying it in to activate the product and applying more as blow dried. This product will help further enhance texture.
3. Using a curling tong, take 1 inch sections and curl all around the hair in the same direction away from the face.
4. Pin each curl and allow to cool, setting the hair with O&M Original Queenie Firm Hold Hairspray.
5. Once cooled and set, remove pins and brush through hair. Finishing off with Desert Dry at the roots for more volume, O&M Frizzy Logic Shine serum at the ends for further definition and shine.
