Dyson has firmly cemented itself as an innovator in the hair industry. Late last year, the brand announced they will be investing $903.8 million to extend its haircare ambitions. Since the first hair launch in 2016, the Supersonic Hairdryer, we’ve been given the Airwrap—which needs no introduction—and the Corrale, a flexing-plate cordless hair straightener. So, if they’re suite of hits are anything to go by, we won’t be left disappointed.

Last week, Dyson unveiled the latest addition to its hair stable: the Airstrait straightener. A hairdryer and straightener hybrid, it sits in a similar realm to ghd’s latest styler, Duet, but there’s a key point of difference. Airstrait uses exclusively air—no hot plates—to style from wet to dry. According to Dyson, it achieves this through a precisely angled high-pressure blade and powerful focused airflow.

How it works

The Airstrait uses concentrated, high-velocity airflow between the blades, allowing it to grip and direct the hair downwards, drying and setting it into a perfectly straight style. This directional airflow helps align the hair strands for a smooth and shiny finish.

Like the rest of the Dyson hair range, it features intelligent heat control. Glass bead thermistors measure the temperature of the airflow 30 times per second to prevent heat damage and protect hair’s natural shine. This data is sent to the microprocessor which regulates the heating element, ensuring airflow doesn’t exceed the temperature required.

Two styling modes—wet and dry—are pre-set with the specific heat and airflow combination for best results. For airflow control, there are two speed settings, low flow and high flow, as well as a cold shot and root drying mode.

Unfortunately, for Kiwis eager to get their hands on the tool, we’ll have to be patient. The Dyson Airstrait straightener will be available in New Zealand in 2024 with pricing to be confirmed.
