The 2023 Australian Hair Fashion Awards (AHFAs) took to Sydney’s The Star to celebrate the editorial prowess of our talented hairdressing community, in an evening where hair art, fashion and entertainment collided. Chinney Yeap, founder of Salute Hair & Day Spa in Wellington, was crowned the prestigious title of New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year.

Alongside Chinney, the finalists for New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year were Anthony Bayer (Anthony Bayer Hair), Kylie Hayes (Moha Hairdressing), Majid Joshan, Mana Dave (Blaze & Pony Professionel), and Michael Beel (Salute Hair & Day Spa, ex-Buoy Salon & Spa), who was also nominated for Hair Shot of the Year and Editorial Stylist of the Year.

Hailing from Wellington, Chinney has made a name for herself as a renowned colourist, with an impressive array of awards both in New Zealand and abroad. Her dedication to her craft, coupled with her expertise in custom colours and effortless styles, has solidified her place as a true industry trailblazer.

Chinney’s hairdressing journey began during her overseas experience in London, where she was captivated by the artistry and innovation of Toni & Guy. Inspired by their work, she eagerly embraced the scissors and colour brush, eager to develop her own unique style.

Exceptional colour work has earned Chinney acclaim both at home and on the global stage. Her expertise in freehand and balayage techniques, in particular, has garnered attention from industry insiders. With her precision and creativity, she consistently delivers effortless and luxurious custom colours.

The esteemed hairdresser’s talent and dedication has been duly recognised through her exceptional list of accomplishments. Finalist for the Hair Expo Colourist of the Year, two-time L’Oréal Hairdresser of the Year finalist, Wella Trend Vision NZ silver, bronze, and gold medals, and a finalist for Industry NZ Men’s Hairdresser of the Year, are just a few of her impressive accolades. Notably, Chinney’s work has been celebrated by both her peers and the public, having received the Hair Expo People’s Choice Award.
