Anyone who has fallen victim to a deep, cystic breakout (AKA almost everyone), will know that they’re in a class of their own. Not only are they painful, prolonged and impossible to pop, they often leave behind a mess in their wake too. People often resort to dermatologists and prescription treatments to treat this type of acne but a viral gel on TikTok is proving to be an effective no-derm-needed solution.

US-based beauty TikToker, Lala Luv Beauty, shared her five-day journey to clearing cystic acne, and the video has since clocked up almost seven million views for the incredible transformation that the treatment has made to her painful skin.

The spot treatment has since gone viral, with users showcasing impressive before and after photos of their breakouts.

How it works

It’s brimming with acne-fighting ingredients, including two percent salicylic acid, amino acid tecnhology, phyosteriod, and an invisible film-forming polymer. As a chemical exfoliant, salicylic acid can help target inflammation and reduce excess oil. Meanwhile, the amino acids combat acne-causing bacteria and the phytosteroid calms pain and reduces redness. Finally, the polymer acts as a seal for all of these ingredients, so that the spot treatment is as effective as possible.

Tracey Wilmot, Murad International Education Director, says that while the most well-known ingredient is the salicylic acid, it’s the ground cherry extract that sets it apart from the others.

“The key to its performance is ground cherry extract, a ‘phytosteroid’ that works in a similar way to hydrocortisone and can be very effective for the most severe forms of breakouts,’ she explains. “The treatment is designed to calm the inflammatory response, reduce pain and swelling of the skin associated with severe blemishes.”
