Winners Announced for HITO’s 2024 Apprentice of the Year Awards
Hairdressing, barbering and beauty therapy apprentices from across New Zealand have been recognised in the 2024 Regional HITO Apprentice of the Year awards. These awards, first established in 2003, celebrate the hard work and commitment of apprentices carving out their career in the competitive beauty industry.
This year, a high standard was set by the entrants, showcasing not only their skills but also their personal journeys as HITO apprentices. Finalists eloquently articulated what qualifying in their trade signifies to them and laid out their aspirations for successful careers within their industries.
To enhance the recognition of these talented apprentices, HITO segmented the awards regionally, establishing Northern, Central, and Southern categories. The celebrations took place throughout November, culminating in three graduation ceremonies held in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch on November 3rd, 10th, and 17th, respectively. These events not only honoured HITO graduates but also celebrated the achievements of the Apprentice of the Year finalists, allowing them to gain recognition in front of their families, friends, and peers.
“Combining our annual graduation with the Apprentice of the Year awards and holding three ceremonies across New Zealand allowed us to celebrate with more of our industry and graduates and their friends, family, and colleagues. We have had amazing feedback from those who attended,” says Kay Nelson, HITO Director. “Acknowledging the incredible work HITO apprentices do in and out of the workplace, while working full time and pursing their qualification, is extremely important to us.”
The judges faced difficulty in selecting only one winner from each region, ultimately recognising five exceptional apprentices across the nation. A recurring theme in the judges’ feedback was the palpable ‘passion’ displayed by the finalists and winners, who exemplified the potential in their industries and served as role models, advocating for apprenticeship training.
Congratulations to the 2024 HITO Regional Apprentices of the Year!
